Cryptic Studios is looking for a talented and driven Lead Designer for a video game based on the Magic: The Gathering property. The Lead Designer carries and communicates the game design vision to the development team while leading the design team to fulfill this vision, then support the game after launch. Every day you could be:

  • Establishing and refining the game vision in collaboration with the Executive Producer
  • Communicating and collaborating with designers, artists, and producers to help make the vision a reality
  • Managing a talented team of combat, level, and system designers
  • Providing concise and critical feedback to iteratively improve the game
  • Writing and presenting designs and design concepts
  • Evaluating and improving on the development pipeline
  • Making hiring decisions as we grow the team
  • Working with the Executive Producer and other leads to make the hard decisions that game development require

Things we'd like to see:

  • 8+ years of game development experience, with two or more shipped titles and at least one title for the full life cycle
  • Proven ability to lead a game design team, including the ability to provide clear direction and to mentor less experienced team members
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Clear understanding of the game development process and the role that design plays in this process
  • Experience in MMOs and/or RPG games as a player or designer
  • BA or BS degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience


  • Experience with Magic: The Gathering card game and fiction
  • Experience with free-to-play game design and monetization
  • Experience with both PC and console titles
